Grover Mitchell played trombone in the Count Basie band for many years going all the way back to 1962 and would end up taking over leadership of the Count Basie Orchestra from 1995 until his death in 2003. For this album, recorded in 1990, Mitchell enlisted a bevy of arrangers to write the charts: Frank Foster, Eric Dixon, Ernie Wilkins, Cecil Bridgewater, Jerry Dodgion, Dennis Mackrel, Dale Carley, Mike Abene and Bill Ramsay. And pretty much everybody in this all-star band gets an opportunity to be in the solo spotlight.
