Об альбоме (сборнике)

Tommy Flanagan's first trio album was recorded in August 1957 and titled Overseas. By the time Overseas was taped, Flanagan had already participated on more than 25 albums, an impressive number considering that his first studio appearance was in March 1956. Albums prior to his first trio recordings include collaborations with Kenny Burrell, Thad Jones, Miles Davis, Kenny Clarke, Sahib Shihab, Oscar Pettiford, Phil Woods, Sonny Rollins, Bobby Jaspar, Donald Byrd, J. J. Johnson, Cecil Payne, Herbie Mann and, last but not least, John Coltrane. These collaborations produced such essential jazz albums as Rollins' Saxophone Colossus and Miles' Collector's Items. The quantity of important works for such a young and still relatively unknown pianist gives testimony to Flanagan's enormous talents as well as his reliability as a musician. Despite these numerous accomplishments he even made some outstanding solo piano albums, Flanagan didn't record prolifically in the trio format until forming his own trio in 1978. This makes his early efforts in this camp more important to listen to, as they mark the starting point for his later trio development. The only other sessions devoted to the trio in Flanagan's discography prior to 1978 were his 1960 LP The Tommy Flanagan Trio, with Tommy Potter and Roy Haynes, and a 1959 date with Joe Benjamin and Elvin Jones, playing Leonard Bernstein's music from West Side Story, which wasn't issued at that time and appeared many years later under the title of Lonely Town. Both sessions are included here, plus five miscellaneous trio tracks.
