История первых двух альбомов Navigator с уже несуществующего официального а
”Northern ConSequence” is the first album by Navigator, a new band on the EM scene. The band
is unique in the sense that it came to life as a collaboration between musicians from 5 different
countries (Belgium, Denmark, England, Germany and the Netherlands) and several other bands /
projects (including wEirD, Kubusschnitt, Patchwork and Kenton Files).
The core members of the band are Tony Andersen and Kent Eskildsen from Denmark, and Jens
Peschke from Germany. They first ”met” on an Internet mailing list dedicated to the
discussion of electronic music.
All three contributed tracks to the critically acclaimed compilation albums ”GoldTri: Volume
One” and ”GoldTri: Volume 2”. A mutual respect for each other’s music led to the idea of a
collaborative project, and thus Navigator was born.
The original intention was to exploit the potential of the Internet for making interactive
music, but they were forced to abandon that idea when it became apparent that the Internet is not
yet a suitable vehicle for transporting sounds and timbres in Cyberspace. However, as bandwidth
continues to increase and connectivity continues to improve, the band is confident that their
original idea will be able to be realised in the not-too-distant future.
Navigator’s first recordings were made in the Netherlands in Spring 1998, with additional
recording sessions taking place later in Denmark and Germany. Despite the large distances between
the individual musicians, they were able to work quickly, using e-mail and the Internet to
exchange ideas.
The music for Northern ConSequence was put together during the final (hectic!) months of
the 20th Century. It was mastered in December 1999 and is due for release on the German label
”Invisible Shadows” in March / April 2000.
At the heart of Navigator’s music lie very skillfully made sequences. These sequences, which
range from relaxed and mellow to up-tempo and heavy, are accompanied by a varied mix of
melodic lead lines, played on synth and guitar, and atmospheric soundscapes and softer Mellotron
sounds. The sound will be familiar to lovers of traditional EM like vintage Tangerine Dream and
Ashra, but the music of Navigator always has a modern, 21st Century, ”edge” to it.
Most of the tracks on ”Northern ConSequence” started life as improvisations which were then
refined in the studio. However, the band has contributed a track called ”Third Rail Floating”
to the Invisible Shadows sampler album ”Gift”. This track is a purely improvised piece which
sounds exactly as it did when it was recorded in Denmark in October 1999.
The first recording session for the second Navigator album has been in April 2000 and was
finished in autumn 2001. The CD called Oceanic Empire was released by Groove in July 2002.
At the same time Navigator began to make plans about going live and a test concert was
performed by Tony and Kent in the autumn of 2002; A new art-museum was being build in the
center of Kent´s hometown and they wanted some publicity around it, so Tony and Kent
performed a DJ-set of more or less unreleased Navigator tracks and some live playing.
It went really well and the idea of Navigator becoming a live act was born.
On the 1th of February 2003 Navigator performed their first real concert in a small Café Cinema
in a village by the west coast of Denmark. Navigator played mostly unreleased music which was
going to appear on the third CD Airwaves and some ambient improvised tracks - all
well supported by visuals made by various friends.
The concert was called Audio Visual Ambience by Navigator
All technical aspects had to be build from scratch and a lot of time was spend on making a sound
and lightning system for that and further events. On the night everything floated well together and got
a very positive reception by the audience.
Audio and video recordings were of course made of the event and will eventually find it´s way to
at least hardcore fans...
The preparation for the first Navigator concert also made some new tracks to surface, which
made the core of the third Navigator release.
By now most tracks are layed out and Airwaves as it is going to be called, is planned to be
released by Groove Records at the E-live festival in Eindhoven on September 29th 2003.
The music will show a slight departure from the Berlin School music and Navigator will in the
future explore other territories of electronic music.
Other plans for 2003 are concerts in Germany and Denmark. Video release of the Arrival
track from Northern Consequence and a video of the first Navigator concert. A solo release by
Jens Peschke and maybe Tony and Kent finally will release their Into the Atoms as the band
Kenton - a project which has been in the making for about five years....
